Fort Sumter, South Carolina

Fort Sumter was a fort locate on an island in the Charleston Harbor. The fort was held by the Northern army, which was desperately needing resupplied. South Carolina did not like that the Union held the fort. The Confederate army demanded the evacuation of the fort, but the North refused to. Angered by this action, the Confederates opened fire on the fort. The Union ended up surrendering, and more importantly, the Civil War had just begun. South Carolina was the first state who seceded from the United States to become the Confederate States of America.

Since the North surrendered, the South had won AND taken the fort.

First Battle of Bull Run

This battle is considered the first real battle of the Civil War. The Union was marching towards the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Virginia. The Confederate troops in the area quickly retreated, and the reinforcements pushed the Union army back. The Union then retreated back to the North. This battle proved it wouldn't be an easy war for either side. The South was feeling very victorious, leaving the North hungry for revenge.

The South had one this battle, and as stated above, the North was craving revenge.

Battle of Gettysburg

This was the last major battle of the Civil War.The was a three day battle with heavy casualties on both sides, surprisingly, only one civilian, known as Jennie Wade,  was killed throughout the three days. General Lee wanted to get between the Union army and Washington D.C.
Day 1 - Confederates did not know how many troops the Union had, making then cautious in their attack.
Day 2 - More Union troops occupied the high ground, and the Confederates tried flanking the Union army(Little Round Top.)
Day 3 - General Lee sent his entire force across an open field. General George Pickett led a bayonet charge, slaughtering Confederate troops.

The Union had won at Gettysburg, and heavy casualties made it so the South could no longer fight.

Sherman's March to Sea

While Grant was trying to capture Richmond in the North, he sent General William Tucumseh Sherman to 'clear' the South. Sherman chased the Confederate army around, trying to lure them into a fight. As Sherman and his men marched, they wiped out anything in their path. Things destroyed were plantations, buildings, towns, and farms. 100,000 troops took Atlanta in 1864 and burnt half the city to the ground. After Atlanta, they marched towards Savanah on the coast. Sherman's march was the last demoralizing blow to the South.

Sherman basically destroyed everything, important and nonimportant.
